PROPHETS Quotes on Food Storage

(Also see the Prophets Quotes, specifically on the Word of Wisdom, in topic "Daniel Diet" and subtopic, "Prophets Quotes")

We have been commanded

and repeatedly warned

to store food, water

and every needful thing...

for about 80 years now, whether for financial or natural disaster reasons, it doesn't even matter as to why..... the mere fact that the Lord's prophets and apostles have spoken so directly and passionately about it should be good enough for us!

Elder George A. Smith -
"How on the face of the earth could a man enjoy his religion when he had been
told by the Lord how to prepare for a day of famine, when, instead of doing so, he had fooled away that which would have sustained him and his family."
(Journal of Discourses, Vol 12, page 142)

President J. Reuben Clark (Church News, 1953) –

When we really get into hard times, where food is scarce or there is none at all, and so with clothing and shelter, money may be no good for there may be nothing to buy, and you cannot eat money, you cannot get enough of it together to burn to keep warm, and you cannot wear it.  You can’t eat money, but you can eat your three-month supply of food – IF YOU HAVE IT AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT."

Elder Ezra Taft Benson (as an apostle) -

"Should the Lord decide at this time to cleanse the Church ...a famine in this land of one year's duration could wipe out a large percentage of sloughful members, including some ward and stake officers. Yet we cannot say we have not been warned." General Conference, April 1965.

Elder Ezra Taft Benson (as an apostle) -
"When will all these calamities strike? We do not know the exact time, but it appears it may be in the not-too-distant future.
Those who are prepared now have the continuing blessings of early obedience, and they are ready. Noah built his ark before the flood came. The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah."
"Prepare Ye" , Ensign January 1974

President Ezra Taft Benson
(General Conference Oct 1980
"Prepare for the Days of Tribulation", now as the prophet offering his own remarks and in addition repeating many quotes from past prophets and apostles) -

"Plan to build up your food supply just as you would a savings account... We urge you to do this prayerfully and do it now."

“There are blessings in being close to the soil, in raising your own food even if it is only a garden in your yard and a fruit tree or two. Those families will be fortunate who, in the lasts days, have an adequate supply of food because of their foresight and ability to produce their own.”

See Ezra Taft Benson's picture in this subtopic.

President Spencer W. Kimball - "The little gardens and a few trees are very valuable. I remember when the sisters used to say, `well, but we could buy it at the store a lot cheaper than we could put it up.' But that isn't quite the answer, is it, Sister Spafford?

Because there will become a time when there isn't a store." General Conference April 1974.

President Harold B. Lee – “If you knew what I knew, you would pile it up (referring to food storage) in the middle of the floor, throw a cloth over it and walk around it!”
(My personal note: I have read countless remarks about how this quote cannot be found, thus documented, so it is being discounted - seriously? Whether it has been paraphrased, actually existed in context or not is NOT the issue.... are there not COUNTLESS other quotes which are documented about the urgency of such preparation!?
Let's go one better and read what the prophet Harold B. Lee had to say:
"Are you...aware of the fact that we need no such publications to be forewarned, if we were only conversant with what the scriptures have already spoken to us in plainness?
'Admonitions for the Priesthood of God, Ensign Jan 1973, p. 106'. Enough said!

Elder Marion G. Romney -
"We will see the day when we will live on what we produce" General Conference April 1975.

Bishop H. Burke Peterson -
"On the average, about 30 percent of the church has a two-month supply of food.
The remainder have little or none....become self-sufficient as possible to
prepare against the days to come." General Conference October 1975.

President Boyd K. Packer -

"When people are able but unwilling to take care of themselves we are responsible to employ the dictum of the Lord that the idler shall not eat the bread of the laborer."
("Self Reliance", March 2, 1975)

Elder Bruce R. McConkie -
"I stand before the Church this day and raise the warning voice.
It is a prophetic voice, for I shall say only what the apostles and the prophets have spoken concerning our day. ...It is a voice calling upon the Lord's people to prepare for the troubles and desolations which are
about to be poured upon the world without measure.

For the moment, we live in a day of peace and prosperity but it shall not ever be thus. Great trials lie ahead. All of the sorrows and perils of the past are but a foretaste of what is yet to be.
And we must prepare ourselves temporally and spiritually." General Conference April 1979.

Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone -
“Now what about those who would plunder and break in and take that which we have stored for our families’ needs?
Don’t give this one more idle thought. There is a God in heaven whom we have obeyed. Do you suppose he would abandon those who have kept his commandments? He said, ‘If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear’.

The Lord will not abandon us. In fact, He has declared that if we obey Him, He is bound to bless us. In my opinion, this divine declaration applies to the commandment to obtain our food storage just as it applies to any other commandment."

Someone, I didn’t record who, was quoting Elder Featherstone above, and he adds his own comment here in ( ), then continues quoting Elder Featherstone….

….(The Lord has prepared a way for you to obey His commandment to obtain and use long-term food storage. Once you start down that path, you will start to receive the blessing He has in store for you and your family .)

As Elder Featherstone proclaimed, “The Lord will make it possible, if we make a firm commitment, for every Latter-day Saint family to have a year supply of food reserves… All we have to do is to decide, commit to do it, and then keep the commitment. Miracles will take place; the way will be opened.” (April 1976 General Conference "Food Storage")
**In this fantastic talk he mentions HOW to acquire a food storage if money is tight and do we need to share our storage with others?

Victor Brown -
"...I feel our anxieties are justified. It is the opinion of many that more difficult times lie ahead.
We are deeply concerned about the welfare of our people...and
suffering that will exist if each person and family does not accept the word of the Lord when he says, 'Prepare every needful thing'.
(Oct 1980 General Conference "Prepare Every Needful Thing")

Elder L. Tom Perry -

"Instability in the world today makes it imperative that we take heed of the counsel and prepare for the future.
As long as I can remember, we have been taught to prepare....I believe
the time to disregard this counsel is over.... it must be considered with all seriousness."

(Oct 1995 General Conference "If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear")

President Gordon B. Hinckley -
"There is a portent of
stormy weather ahead to which we had better give heed.
We are carrying a message of self reliance throughout the Church...that's all I have to say about it, but I wish to say it with all the emphasis of which I am capable."
("A Prophetic Voice" General Conference Oct 1998)
